Biography
Richard Mensah was born in 1978 in Ghana. He lives and works in London, United Kingdom.
A self-taught artist, Mensah developed an early passion for drawing, sketching, and painting before moving to the United Kingdom in the early 2000s. After a long interruption, he fully returned to his practice in 2016, building a figurative body of work that is vivid, narrative, and deeply personal.
His painting draws from his African heritage, childhood memories, and scenes of everyday life. Through compositions that move between abstraction and realism, Mensah gives form to stories shaped by Black memory, social questions, community, and human experience.
His works draw the viewer in through their intense colors, bodily presence, use of light, and symbolic details. Each scene remains open: it invites the viewer to enter the story, to read its signs, and to complete what is deliberately left suspended.
His work approaches intimacy as a universal language: for Richard Mensah, painting becomes a space of memory, dignity, and transmission, where personal narratives meet a broader collective experience.
