Biography
Matthieu Schaeffer was born in 1998. He lives and works between Paris and Hossegor. Raised between France and Kenya, he first trained in aerospace engineering before fully turning to painting in 2023.
His work constructs an artificial garden: a recomposed nature, familiar yet displaced, where animals, flowers, and plants seem to be made of plastic, cardboard, or molded matter. Everything is painted, yet everything appears fabricated. Through this ambiguity, Schaeffer questions the boundary between the living and the inert, the natural and the artificial, memory and reconstruction.
Working through a dialogue between digital imagery, 3D modeling, and hand painting, he has developed a precise technique using acrylic and spray gun. His smooth, luminous, almost sculptural surfaces give his figures a strange presence: seemingly naïve, yet charged with an intimate depth linked to childhood, memory, and the desire for life.
His practice resonates with an approach to intimacy as a universal language: for Matthieu Schaeffer, repainting nature becomes a way to repair, to breathe, and to recreate a habitable world.
