Halee Roth

Halee Roth lives and works in Utah, United States, where the mountains, desert landscapes and cultivated gardens of her surroundings have long shaped her relationship to painting. Trained in painting and drawing at Utah State University, with a particular focus on the human figure, she later studied in Germany and spent time in India, experiences that strengthened her interest in expressive colour and the possibilities of light.

The human figure remains at the centre of Roth’s practice, yet her paintings are less concerned with portraiture than with presence. Bodies emerge within fluid, partly abstract environments, accompanied by natural forms, areas of shadow and intense passages of colour. Working through successive transparent layers of paint, Roth uses colour as light, allowing warm and cool tones to model the figure while giving the surface an almost internal luminosity.

Nature and the body are treated as part of the same visual continuum. Drapery, vegetation and organic forms move across and around the figure, creating compositions in which intimacy is conveyed through gesture, light and physical presence rather than narrative. Throughout the work, beauty is not presented as something fixed or decorative, but as something found in the tension between darkness and illumination, fragility and vitality.
