Anthea Xīn

Anthea Xīn is an artist, poet and performer of Chinese and Italian heritage. Working primarily through large-scale painting, her practice explores thresholds : between the body and the natural world, the intimate and the immense, physical sensation and forms of experience that resist easy definition.

Her paintings often move between biological and cosmological scales. Cellular structures, planetary atmospheres, geological formations and fields of light appear to echo one another, bringing the body into relation with larger systems of transformation. Geometry meets spontaneous mark-making, while oil, acrylic, airbrush and natural pigments build surfaces that feel at once precise and deeply physical.

Xīn’s practice is informed by Eastern contemplative traditions and by her longstanding engagement with meditation, ritual and movement. These experiences enter the work through the process of making itself: the body becomes both instrument and point of departure, a place where perception, memory and sensation can be registered through gesture.

Beyond painting, Xīn develops immersive environments incorporating sound, spoken word and performance. Across these different forms, her work returns to a deeply intimate question: how an individual body can contain, perceive and respond to forces far greater than itself

Her work has been presented internationally in Hong Kong, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Mexico and Ireland, and has been featured in publications including My Modern Met and Divide Magazine. Xīn holds a BSc in Psychology from the University of London and has undertaken contemplative training at Stanford University as well as extended silent retreats studying Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas.
